This lecture is the program for our regular May meeting. The dinner portion of this meeting is a vegan potluck at 5:30 PM. You are very welcome for the dinner or the lecture or both. Tips and advice about bringing a vegan dish can be found on p. 2 of our newsletter.
Gene Baur is Co-Founder of Farm Sanctuary, with locations in Watkins Glen, NY and in Orland, California. Farm Sanctuary has rescued thousands of animals, and has started thousands of people on the pathway of vegan eating, thereby saving even more animals. Farm Sanctuary also spearheads legislative efforts to improve the treatment of farmed animals.
Gene Baur has written a book of the same title as his lecture, and copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
We have learned so much about the health reasons for and advantages of a plant-based diet. This is an opportunity to broaden your motivation to follow a plant-based diet by learning the ways in which it helps animals and the environment. Though the facts of animal agriculture are hard to hear about, we promise that you will be inspired and your heart will be warmed by this lecture.

Jack Norris is co-founder and Director of Vegan Outreach (VO), an organization which produces and distributes pamphlets such as “Why Vegan?” raising awareness of the consequences of food choices. VO’s Adopt-A-College program distributes 500,000 pamphlets yearly. Norris is a nutritionist who has made a study of the ways in which we can fine-tune a vegan diet in order to achieve optimum health. Norris maintains the sites JackNorrisRD.com and VeganHealth.org. Norris has recently co-written, with Virginia Messina, MPH, R.D., Vegan for Life: Everything You Need to Know to Be Healthy and Fit on a Plant-Based Diet. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
We have learned so much about plant-based eating over the last several months, from sources like the film “Forks Over Knives” and from lectures by Dr. Barnard and Dr. Campbell. This is a chance to learn the small but important adjustments that will make your plant-based diet most powerful for health.

7:00 PM Brighton Town Hall, 1st floor auditorium, 2300 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, 14618. Parking at both front and rear of building. Free vegan refreshments will be served!

You are very welcome for the dinner or the lecture or both. Tips and advice about bringing a vegan dish can be found on p. 2 of our newsletter.
Jeff Novick is a nutritionist who formerly worked at the Pritikin Institute, and now lectures at the McDougall Residential Program in Santa Rosa, California and the Engine 2 Program in Austin, Texas. Mr. Novick has been a frequent speaker at Vegetarian Summerfest. He is extremely entertaining and a genuinely funny man. This is definitely a spoonful of sugar that won’t go to your waistline.

Dr. Greger is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and Tufts University School of Medicine. He has written books on mad cow disease, bird flu, and the dangers of low-carb diets. Dr. Greger is the Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture at the Humane Society of the United States, and he maintains the site NutritionFacts.org, where you can find short videos on virtually every nutritional topic. He speaks to wide acclaim at Vegetarian Summerfest every year.
Every year Dr. Greger reads and analyzes thousands of nutrition studies from around the world, and distills them into this yearly Nutrition Update, which is presented in a lively interactive quiz show format (with prizes!). This is an extremely fun and funny don’t-miss event (ask those who have seen Dr. Greger’s presentation in previous years). Another spoonful of sugar!
